RAi UK joins the European Trustworthy AI Foundation

A landmark collaboration driving responsible AI innovation accross borders

Born from the ambition of the Confiance.ai program partners to expand the trustworthy AI community at the European level, the European Trustworthy AI Foundation announces its collaboration with the UK ecosystem Responsible AI UK (RAi UK) — an open, multidisciplinary network dedicated to research and innovation in responsible AI. This partnership is formalized through a cooperation agreement between SystemX, coordinator of the European foundation, and RAi UK, a consortium led by the University of Southampton.

The open-source foundation, led by IRT SystemX and initially launched with Air Liquide, Naval Group, Safran, Sopra Steria, and Thales, brings together European (and more broadly global) stakeholders committed to the development of industrial and responsible AI — including industry players, researchers, start-ups, tech SMEs, standardization bodies, and regulators. Its mission is to provide engineering teams with a robust methodology and cutting-edge, sustainable open-source tools to enable trustworthy, secure, responsible AI that complies with regulations.

More specifically, this partnership will enable:

  • Expanding the international trustworthy AI network by strengthening connections between UK research and European institutions
  • Conducting interdisciplinary research by combining technical expertise with social science approaches to address complex socio-technical challenges related to AI deployment
  • Translating research into practice by developing tools, methodologies, and frameworks to help businesses implement responsible AI principles in real-world applications
  • Shaping policies and standards by working with regulators and policymakers to develop evidence-based frameworks that ensure AI benefits society while minimizing potential harm

Initial collaborations underway

Last April, RAi UK organized the landmark event “Global AI Responsibility: Policy, Innovation, and Ethics Across Borders” in London, in collaboration with the foundation. The event brought together thought leaders from the UK and Europe to shape the future of responsible AI. For both organizations, it served as a platform to initiate the first steps of a collaborative plan around nine key areas: research results valorization, open-source maintenance, expert support, research on industrial challenges, participation in working groups (scientific, standards, training, communication), and ecosystem development.

Building on this momentum, the partners are already working together on the organization of the upcoming Trustworthy AI Summit in France, scheduled for September 16, and are jointly developing the ATRASS seminar series (Artificial Intelligence Trustworthiness and Risk Assessment Scientific Seminars).

By combining our complementary expertise and networks, this collaboration will act as a powerful catalyst to increase our impact, in support of our shared ambition to promote responsible AI for both industry and the general public.”

Nicolas Rebierre, manager of the European Trustworthy AI Foundation

This collaboration is a crucial step in our mission to connect UK research into Responsible AI with leading global organisations. By partnering with the European Trustworthy AI Foundation, we create a powerful cross-border alliance that will accelerate the development of best practices for designing, evaluating, regulating, and operating AI systems that truly benefit people, society, and our nations. Together, we’re building a framework for responsible innovation that transcends boundaries and establishes new international standards for trustworthy AI.
